How do British apple growers know exactly when an apple is ready to harvest?

This is some serious picking power!

This team of nine Revo harvesting platforms is busy picking British Gala, with six people working on each platform and each person harvesting around 230 to 330kg of fruit every hour!

That’s roughly 2,300 to 2,800 apples per person, per hour! 🤯

A brilliant example of how skilled teams and modern technology work together to bring the British harvest in efficiently.

Apples that don't make it through the 120mm ring find a home at local greengrocers, since supermarkets have specific packaging requirements.

It's all about ensuring that each apple finds its perfect place in the market.

Can you spot the crab apples hiding among the crop?

As we pan down this orchard, look closely and you may notice a few trees producing much smaller, slightly different-looking apples. These are crab apple trees, and they have an important job to do.

Back in spring, these trees stood out for another reason. Their pink blossom appeared among the white Gala flowers, providing pollen for visiting bees, moths and other insects to carry between flowers. This cross-pollination helps the Gala flowers set fruit and plays an essential role in producing the crop you can see today.

Months later, with harvest almost here, the crabapples are still easy to spot if you know what you’re looking for. How many can you see?
